South Africa, Home of the Velds
- The word "veld" means "field" in the Afrikaan's language of South Africa.
- Velds carpet the high plateaus and mountainsides of southeast Africa.
- There are several different kinds of veld-
- High Velds (High Plateaus) - coolest regions of grasslands and forests; found between elevations of 4,000 and 6,000 feet
- Low Velds (Bush-clad lowland plains) - consists of savanna vegetation; found between elevations of 500 and 2,000 feet
- Thorn Velds
- Grass Velds - also known as "Middle Velds" consists of rolling grasslands and good agricultural land; found between elevations of 2,000 and 4,000 feet
- Bush Velds found over much of northern South Africa has a mix of tall grasses and trees such as acacia thorns and baobabs.
- Velds support a wealth of rare wildlife.
- High Velds are dominated by red grasses which may be sweet or sour.
- The sweet grasses provide a good source of food for animals
